Kauai is one of those destinations that you often dream about visiting, and when you finally book the flight and explore the lush green island, you never want to leave. Lovingly referred to as the Garden Isle, this gorgeous slice of paradise is one of the islands that comprise the state of Hawaii. Kauai is known for its lush landscapes, expansive beaches, delicious food scene, astonishing hiking trails, and quaint towns. It’s the kind of place you daydream about visiting again as you head to the airport to return home. I’ve been fortunate enough to explore Kauai on multiple occasions over the past decade of my life. And for a girl who loves the mountains, I’ll admit that I adore Kauai and will gladly revisit it time and time again. I wanted to use my knowledge to good use and create this comprehensive 8-Day Kauai Itinerary so you can plan your perfect getaway to the Garden Isle.

8-Day Kauai Itinerary
Throughout my travels and explorations on the island, I’ve compiled this 8-Day Kauai Itinerary to make planning a breeze. Based on my experience, travelers need at least 7 days to explore each region of the island, plus an extra day or two to account for travel time to Hawaii. However, to fully immerse yourself would take a full two weeks, if not more. Meaning you can easily return to Kauai multiple times and enjoy new sights and experiences each time.
As a friendly PSA for those new to my itineraries: my husband, Bill, and I lean more towards a fast-paced style when it comes to our travel plans. But fear not! There is ample time for relaxation built into this Kauai itinerary to enjoy the beautiful beaches the island is known for. For those looking for additional downtime, you could easily skip any of the excursions and instead hang out by the beach, take a stroll in town, or whatever floats your boat!

Day 1: Arrival
There’s nothing quite like arriving at Līhu‘e Airport and beginning your Hawaiian adventure. The first step is to pick up your rental car and drive to the South Shore to check into your accommodation. It’ll take you around 25 to 30 minutes to drive from the airport to Po‘ipū, which is where you will call home for the first few days of your trip. Po‘ipū is a great home base, as you have access to all the Southern Shore sights, the West Coast, and most boat ports for those looking to book a tour (which I highly recommend).
Depending on the time you arrive on the island and how exhausted you are from the travel day, you might not get to maximize your first day here. An easy activity to incorporate in your Kauai itinerary for those looking to see at least one sight is to watch the sunset at Spouting Horn before enjoying dinner somewhere. My recommendations include Da Crack for Mexican food or Porky’s in Koloa for barbecue, both simple, no-fuss options for your first evening. Get some good rest and try to adjust to the time zone changes so you can enjoy the rest of your trip.

Day 2: South Shore Explorations
Morning
If you’re feeling up for it, wake up early and head to one of the South Shore beaches closest to your accommodation for the sunrise. There’s something about a sunrise beach stroll that just hits different. Once your morning hunger kicks in, walk or drive over to Little Fish for an açai bowl, coffee, or a warm breakfast bagel. Or if you’re someone like me, all three. Once you’re done with your first (but certainly not last) açai bowl of the trip, you’ll drive down the magical Tree Tunnel road on the way to Koloa and explore Old Koloa Town. This cute little town has a bunch of shops, a few eateries, coffee shops, and local events hosted throughout the week. Conveniently, the local grocery store is just up the road from here in case you need to load up on any food items for your room.
Kauai Itinerary Tip: Arrive at Little Fish before it opens to avoid a long line and to score the menu items you want before they sell out.
Afternoon
Before heading back to Po‘ipū, having lunch at Koloa Fish Market is a must. This low-key poke spot is one of the best on the island and is perfect for a laid-back bite to eat. Once you arrive back at your hotel, you have the rest of the afternoon to visit Po‘ipū Beach for snorkeling and relaxing. Alternatively, you could sit by the pool if your accommodation offers that amenity.
Evening
You’ll want to get cleaned up for dinner because tonight you’re dining at the well-known Beach House Restaurant. You’ll come for the stunning oceanfront views, and you’ll stay for the incredible meal and delicious cocktails. This place is a bit of a splurge, but it’s well worth the hype in my opinion. I highly recommend booking a reservation well in advance, and, if possible, during sunset.

Day 3: Waimea Canyon & Kōke‘e State Park
Morning
Today is an early start, so that you can make the trek to the untamed beauty of the West Coast of Kauai. It’ll take you roughly 45 minutes to arrive within the boundaries of Waimea Canyon State Park. As you drive into the canyon, be sure to stop at the many scenic lookouts, including Waimea Canyon Overlook and Pu‘u Hinahina Lookout. One of the most gorgeous and formidable trails resides in this region of Kauai, and if you’re up for the challenge, it’s well worth your efforts. The Awa’awapuhi Trail is 5.8 miles long and gains 1,863 feet, but offers the most incredible views of the Nā Pali Coast. If you plan to hike the Awa’awapuhi Trail, ensure you’re prepared with proper footwear, water, and sun protection, and be aware of your fitness level.
If you decide to hike, you should come prepared with a reusable water bottle and follow the Leave No Trace Principles.
Afternoon
Once you’ve completed your hike, you can continue to explore the remainder of Kokeʻe State Park. Be sure to check out the main lookouts, including Kalalau Lookout and Pu’u O Kila Lookout, before heading back into town on your way to Po‘ipū. For lunch, grab a taco at Island Taco in Waimea Town or pack a lunch and enjoy it within the park at one of the lookouts.
Evening
Return to the South Shore for the evening hours so you can enjoy your final evening in Po‘ipū. Swing by The Shops at Kukui‘ula in the early evening for a bit of shopping. This outdoor shopping center features a variety of boutiques for all types of travelers, as well as an ice cream shop and a small drug store. Once you’ve completed your shopping, you can dine at Eating House 1849 for an incredible Hawaiian meal by Chef Roy Yamaguchi. You’ll get to experience traditional Hawaiian dining with modern fare. As a bonus, they have great cocktails and even better service.

Day 4: Nā Pali Boat Tour & East Shore Waterfalls
Morning
You’ll get to witness the beautiful Nā Pali Coast by boat on your final morning on the southern part of the island. Since most major boat ports are located in this region, it’s beneficial to take advantage of them to access various tour options. We booked our tour through Blue Ocean Adventure Tours and loved our experience on their Zodiac Boat Tour. We had the chance to explore some caves off the coast, snorkel, and we saw a school of about 50 or so dolphins – truly magical. They also have catamaran tours if that’s more your vibe. Either way, having an opportunity to take in the sights of the Nā Pali Coast this way will easily be a highlight of your trip.
Afternoon
After your boat excursion, you likely worked up an appetite. For lunch, swing by Japanese Grandma’s in Hanapepe for sushi or Kauai Island Brewing Company in Eleele for Hawaiian and classic pub fare. If you’re not in a rush after lunch, stroll along the charming little streets of Hanapepe, which is known for its large swinging bridge. It was also the inspiration for the movie Lilo & Stitch, and you can find a cute mural of the characters in town. After you’ve been properly fed and explored the town, it’s time to make your way to the East Shore. The main attractions you’ll see today are Wailua Falls and ‘Ōpaeka‘a Falls, both of which are easily accessible and require no hiking. If you need a pick-me-up, be sure to stop by Java Kai Cafe in Kapa’a for one of the best cups of coffee on the entire island.
Evening
In the late afternoon / early evening, drive to Hanalei on the North Shore and check into your accommodation for the remainder of your Kauai trip. After a busy day, unwind by indulging in a fantastic dinner at AMA Restaurant. They’re known for their ramen bowls, bao buns, cocktails, and the most stunning back patio with views of the Mount Waiʻaleʻale.
Kauai Itinerary Tip: Depending on the day of the week, you might have more limited dinner options in Hanelei. If possible, try to book your time in Hanelei towards the latter half of the week and into the weekend. Many restaurants in Hanelei are closed for dinner on Sundays and Mondays.

Day 5: Hanalei & North Shore Beaches
Morning
Wake up and get ready for a much more low-key and relaxing day on your Kauai itinerary. Start your morning by grabbing coffee and breakfast at Hanalei Bread Co. This is a popular spot in town, so try to get there early in the day to beat the line. The rest of the morning is up to you! You can explore the town of Hanalei and check out the local boutiques or relax on one of the many incredible beaches nearby, such as Hanalei Beach. Another option, depending on conditions, would be to visit Queen’s Bath, as it’s usually less crowded early in the day.
Afternoon
A relaxing morning in Hanalei calls for an unforgettable poke experience. Visit Hanalei Poke for some of the best poke on the island, and relax on their laid-back open-air patio while you refuel for the afternoon. As you leave with a smile on your face after a delightful dining experience, you have the rest of the afternoon to continue your explorations. I recommend swinging by another local beach, like Tunnels Beach, which is excellent for snorkeling. Or Lumaha’i Beach, a less-visited but equally lovely beach with a rope swing for those looking for a little extra fun.
Evening
After a long day of soaking up the sun on the North Shore beaches, it’s time to get cleaned up for another memorable dining experience in Hanalei. Dinner tonight is at the well-known restaurant Bar Acuda for the most mouth-watering tapas in Kauai. The menu rotates frequently to feature seasonal specialties, but honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of the dishes as long as you select a nice variety. I highly recommend booking a reservation as soon as possible since this is one of the most popular restaurants in the area.
If you need a comprehensive packing list for all your travel needs, I’ve got you covered! I created the ultimate packing list for your upcoming adventures, including carry-on essentials, toiletries, clothing, and location-specific items.

Day 6: North Shore Relaxation & Mountain Tubing
Morning
This morning, you can experience another peaceful start to the day in Hanalei before an exciting afternoon. If you’re up for it, a sunrise stroll along Hanalei Beach is a remarkable way to begin the day. Walk along the beach and head towards the Hanalei Pier, enjoying gorgeous views of the ocean and mountain backdrop as the colorful sky changes with the sun’s rise. As you head back into town, grab breakfast at Wishing Well Coffee & Tea for a coffee and an açai bowl. You have a free morning to explore the town, or you can slowly make your way towards the East Coast. My recommendation for your Kauai itinerary would be to stop by Anini Beach for some snorkeling or to read a book by the water.
Afternoon
Making your way back East, you’ll stop in the town of Kīlauea, which is home to the Kīlauea Lighthouse and the Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. A cool place to check out if time permits. For lunch, you have two excellent options: Kīlauea at Kīlauea Fish Market or Sushi Girl. Both of which offer delectable fresh fish and poke options, since you can’t eat too much fish while in Kauai. After lunch, you’ll continue to make your way down the East Coast to Līhu‘e to check in for your mountain tubing adventure with Kauai Backcountry Adventures. This unique tour allows you to float down open canals and through five tunnels hand-dug in the 1800s. If this tour doesn’t sound up your alley, there are many other activities to add to your Kauai itinerary, or you could simply sit by the beach all day with a book or snorkel to your heart’s desire.
Evening
If you decide to book the mountain tubing adventure with Kauai Backcountry Adventures, it’s about a 45-minute trip back to Hanalei. Since you might be beat from an exciting afternoon, you’ll be pleased to arrive at Tahiti Nui for dinner. This laid-back, local favorite Hawaiian restaurant is known for its world-famous mai tais, friendly service, and a robust menu featuring coconut shrimp, seafood, burgers, and pizza. If you’re lucky, you might even get a chance to enjoy some live music while dining in this beloved establishment.
Headed to Kauai? Discover the must-do thrilling activities that will make your trip unforgettable.

Day 7: North Shore Hiking & Waterfalls
Morning
On your final full day in your Kauai itinerary, you’ll lace up your hiking boots for a truly epic hiking experience. Be sure to fuel up at Wake Up Delicious before you make your way to Ha’ena State Park. You’ll need to secure a parking or shuttle pass to enter the park, as they’re trying to limit excess visitors to preserve the park’s natural beauty. Either way, booking your passes well in advance is crucial. When you arrive at Ha’ena State Park, you have two options: The Kalalau Trail to the Beach (3.5 miles) or Hanakāpī‘ai Falls (7.7 miles). The views along the coast are absolutely stunning, so you can’t go wrong with either option. Be sure to check conditions beforehand and pack the appropriate gear, food, and water needed for either trek.
Afternoon
Once you arrive back at the trailhead, make your way over to the bathrooms and change into your bathing suit so you can relax and recover at Ke’e Beach. This beach is only accessible if you purchase a pass to Ha’ena State Park, so it’s an added perk for those willing to invest in a day of stunning scenery and pristine waters, ensuring a more secluded and enjoyable experience away from the crowds. After you’ve had your fill of the state park, head back into Hanalei to freshen up for lunch. If you’re willing to take a little trip to Princeville, stop by Nourish Hanalei for health-conscious sweet and savory bowls and beautiful views of Hanalei. If needed, stop by any shops or boutiques you may have missed for last-minute shopping.
Evening
For your final evening, you would be remiss not to enjoy watching the sunset on the beach. My top two choices for a truly magical sunset experience are Hanalei Beach or Tunnels Beach. Hopefully, you’ve saved up an appetite for fish (and saved up a little extra cash) for your final dinner on the island at The Dolphin. This restaurant has gotten a bad rap over the years for its higher prices, so I’ll admit, I was reluctant to try it. However, I was more than pleasantly surprised with how incredible our entire meal was. Yes, it’s pricey, but well worth it if you’re in the mood to celebrate or just live it up on your final night in Kauai.

Day 8: East Shore & Departure
Morning
Wake up and try not to cry since you’re bidding farewell to the magical island of Kauai today. Grab breakfast in town in Hanalei, and stop by any shops to grab a last-minute souvenir bag of coffee to commemorate your trip. Depending on how much time you have before your flight, I recommend driving 40 minutes to the East Coast and spending some time in Kapa‘a. If you need one last beach fix, you can relax at the expansive Keālia Beach. Alternatively, there are some great shops along the main road in Kapa’a, and it’s an easy place to spend a few hours.
Afternoon
If you do spend the morning in Kapa’a, then a final lunch at Pono Market is a must. If you have additional time before your flight, head to Līhu‘e afterward and explore the shops near the airport before your departure.

With its dramatic landscapes, pristine beaches, and rich culture, Kauai truly offers something for everyone, whether you’re an adventure seeker or a relaxation enthusiast.
