Kauai Style
You may be wondering what the typical style is for both locals and visitors on the island. Kauai is famous for its laid-back vibe that extends into fashion. You’ll find that most people are dressed in casual clothing, including t-shirts, shorts, and flip-flops from day to night. You will even catch the local gentleman driving around shirtless on a nice day! If you plan on taking advantage of Kauai’s fantastic restaurant scene, that would be the one time to pull out a collared shirt or a sundress. No fancy attire is required when traveling to Kauai.
Monthly Weather Overview in Kauai
As I mention in my Kauai travel guide, Kauai has a steady weather pattern throughout the year, ranging from 70° to 85°F (21° to 29°C). The island only has two seasons: wet and dry. The wet season is during the winter months, from November until March, and the dry season is during the summer months, from April until October.
During the winter months, you’ll want to pack a rain jacket and some light layers for cooler evenings. But don’t fret; you can leave your heavy jackets and sweaters at home. Regardless of the season, I recommend anyone traveling to Kauai pack a rain jacket since you can expect brief rain showers throughout the year.
Tops
Starting at the top (pun intended), I suggest packing a mix of cotton t-shirts, tank tops, and some linen options for daytime wear. Linen tank tops are great to include in your Kauai packing list because they are lightweight and very breathable. You also can’t go wrong with packing a handful of basic bodysuits that pair well with shorts and skirts.
If you plan on taking advantage of Kauai’s incredible terrain, you will also want to pack a few hiking or workout tops in your suitcase. Cotton should always be avoided when selecting your outdoor adventure wardrobe since it retains water, and your clothing will feel heavy and damp at the end of your hike. I suggest packing a combination of tank tops, t-shirts, and a long-sleeved option to protect yourself from the sun on the exposed trails.
Depending on the season you visit Kauai and your threshold for the cold, you might consider packing a sweater or light sweatshirt. These are great options to have on hand for those cooler morning walks on the beach or the evening chills on sunburnt skin. When we visited in February, I was very happy to have a light sweatshirt with me, and I wish I had brought a second one to have another option. You can leave your heavy sweatshirts or fleece at home; they won’t be necessary in Kauai!
If you need a comprehensive packing list for all your travel needs, I’ve got you covered! I created the ultimate packing list for your upcoming adventures, including carry-on essentials, toiletries, clothing, and location-specific items.
Bottoms
Next up is packing some bottoms to pair with your tops. Starting with the most obvious, shorts. You can’t go wrong with packing a few pairs of jean shorts in various colors. A classic light wash pair will likely get the most use on the island. Similar to linen tops, linen shorts are a fantastic addition to your Kauai packing list. They’re comfortable and look amazing with a matching linen top or a bodysuit. If you’re looking for an athletic pair of shorts to throw on, this pair is my go-to from Lululemon.
One of my all-time favorite island looks is a white bodysuit paired with a flowy skirt. Skirts are a versatile addition to your Kauai packing list, suitable for dressing up or down and comfortable for all-day wear. Ditch the denim and stick with some classic mid-length cotton skirts. The island can get breezy, so be mindful of packing anything too short, or you risk having a Marilyn Monroe moment on the beach.
The temperatures in Kauai are usually warm enough to not require packing pants, but linen pants are a good choice for those who get cold easily. They’ll be far more comfortable than denim jeans, which you should definitely leave at home. While I was happy to have my light sweatshirt with me in February, I didn’t pack a single pair of jeans, and I’m pleased with that decision. My suitcase was happy with the extra space too!
I never travel anywhere without a pair of leggings. I usually fly in them and then wear them throughout the trip. For Kauai, I wore them when walking to grab my morning coffee or lounging around the hotel. You can also use them if you decide to hike and want your legs covered. However, I recommend wearing biker or hiking shorts instead of full-length pants on the trails.
As an added bonus, I’ve created a digital Kauai packing list that you can download for free!
Dresses
Sundresses are the perfect addition to your Kauai packing list. They can easily be thrown over a swimsuit for a casual daytime look or paired with a dressy sandal for an evening outfit at a restaurant overlooking the water. There’s no need to pack any overly fancy dresses for your evenings in Kauai. Most of the restaurants are on the more relaxed side with the dress code compared to other parts of the world.
Kauai Packing List Tip: Do yourself a favor and save room in your suitcase so you can purchase some fun clothing items to take home. Kauai has a variety of small shops and boutiques scattered around the island that are perfect if you want to buy yourself a non-touristy souvenir.
Undergarments
Packing the right number of undergarments is always a fun puzzle to solve. When traveling to Kauai, it’s best to pack enough underwear for the length of your stay, plus a few extra pairs. You will likely change more frequently after taking a dip in the pool or beach than you would on a non-beach vacation.
Socks, on the other hand, are a different story. Since sandals reign supreme on the island, you will likely only wear socks if you wear gym shoes or hiking boots. You can get away with packing a few pairs of cotton socks to wear with your gym shoes and one or two pairs of merino wool socks if you decide to hike in Kauai. I have an entire blog post dedicated to hot-weather hiking tips, including additional information about hitting the trails when the temperatures creep up!
Last but not least are standard bras and sports bras. For the everyday bras, you’ll want to pack any pairs you need to complement your outfits. I would include a comfortable bra like this one for travel days or lounging. If you plan on hiking, don’t forget to pack a sports bra or two so you have additional support on the trail.
Kauai Packing List Tip: Pack a small travel-size laundry detergent to quickly handwash any items throughout the trip.
Swimsuit
A swimsuit is one of the most essential items to include in your Kauai packing list. The beaches on the Hawaiian islands are among some of the best in the world, and it’s one of the main reasons people travel to Kauai. You’ll likely spend plenty of time hanging by the beach or taking a dip in the ocean or pool each day of your trip. I suggest packing at least three to five swimsuits, depending on the length of your stay, so you always have a clean option on hand.
Another important item to throw in your beach bag is a swimsuit coverup. These come in handy when returning to your hotel after a day at the beach, and you don’t want to dirty your clothes. They’re typically lightweight and shouldn’t take up too much space in your suitcase.
Sleep & Loungewear
Packing a pair of pajamas or sleepwear is necessary for any vacation. I also like to pack a few loungewear items for hanging out in my hotel room and getting ready for the day or evening. There’s no need to pack a ton of options as long as you have a few pieces of comfortable clothing to wear throughout your stay.
Shoes
While you’ll likely be barefoot more often in Kauai than on your typical vacation, you’ll also want to pack a few pairs of shoes for the journey. Sandals are the obvious first choice of footwear on the island. I opted for a flat pair during the day and a neutral-colored heeled pair in the evening to dress up my outfits. I recommend packing one pair of classic rubber flip-flops since they’re easy to throw on when needed, you won’t worry about them getting beat up by the sand, and they take up minimal space in your suitcase.
If you’re looking for a comfortable closed-toe option, be sure to pack a pair of gym shoes or sneakers. These are great if you plan to walk around the town or rent bikes to explore. My favorite is a pair of white sneakers since they look great with every outfit and are comfortable.
Plan on taking advantage of the beautiful hiking trails in Kauai? Then you won’t want to forget to pack your hiking boots. There are a ton of stunning trails that vary in length and elevation gain around the island. You should consider packing the pair with the most ankle support if you plan on hiking some of the longer routes since the trails can get rugged and/or slippery in some spots.

Water shoes are another optional footwear item to include in your Kauai packing list. I personally didn’t pack a pair on our trip to Kauai, but they can come in handy if you plan to spend a lot of time in the ocean.
Kauai Packing List Tip: Do your feet a favor and leave the standard high heels at home. No restaurants require heels, and they don’t fit with the laid-back style in Kauai. Plus, they’re a pain in the butt to pack in your suitcase.
Jackets
As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, Kauai has very mild and comfortable weather all year round. That means you can leave your heavy coats at home if you travel from a colder climate like me. However, a denim jacket is a fantastic item to bring to Kauai. It’s great to wear in the cooler mornings and evenings, especially during the wet season.
One non-negotiable item to include with you from this Kauai packing list is a rain jacket. Regardless of when you visit, you should expect brief rain showers during your stay on the island. Kauai can get windy, so using an umbrella can be a bit inconvenient. I’ve had this rain jacket for years, and it’s held up incredibly well throughout my travels.
Bags
Next up on the Kauai packing list are the bags you should bring to carry your belongings during your stay. You can’t beat having a simple crossbody or a belt bag for daytime use. Or both if you like to have options (I feel you). This crossbody is the one I packed for our trip. It’s perfect for daytime use, and I brought it with me when we went out to dinner.
When it’s time to hit the beach, you’ll want a larger beach bag to store all your belongings. Don’t worry about packing a fancy beach bag since it’ll get plenty of use/wear and tear on this trip.
Another bag to include if you plan on hitting the trails is a hiking day pack. Most hikes on the island won’t require anything larger than your standard 10-25 liter pack so that you can carry your essentials.
If you decide to hike, you should come prepared with a reusable water bottle and follow the Leave No Trace Principles.
Kauai banned plastic shopping bags in grocery stores, and paper bags cost 15 cents each. If you want to avoid paying the fee or carrying your groceries, consider packing a reusable bag. An insulated reusable bag would be a great addition to your Kauai packing list, as you can bring it to the beach, and it’ll keep your beverages cold.
The final optional bag to pack is a dry bag. A dry bag is excellent if you plan to spend time on the water kayaking or on a boat tour since it reduces the risk of your items getting unintentionally wet. You could also bring it to the beach if you’re worried about your phone or any electronics accidentally getting splashed with water.
Accessories
Now for the fun part: accessories. Sunglasses are the most critical to include in your Kauai packing list. Hawaii gets a ton of beautiful sunshine throughout the entire year. Even during the winter months, Kauai gets over 10 hours of sun each day, which is unheard of in some parts of the world. Since the sun can get intense, it’s worth bringing a polarized pair to protect your eyes from the UVs.
Another great accessory to block the sun is a hat. Depending on your style preferences, you could wear a traditional baseball cap, a sun hat, or even a wide-brim hiking hat. Pick the option that suits your style to maximize wearability.
I always bring my reusable water bottle and Liquid IV when traveling. Kauai was no exception, given that the temperature can get balmy each day. Hawaii is a very environmentally conscious state, and they encourage their residents and guests to avoid single-use plastics whenever possible. Liquid IV is a hydration multiplier I like to include in my carry-on to stay hydrated on planes. It’s also great for traveling to warmer destinations or places you plan on hiking.
If you enjoy snorkeling, packing a GoPro or underwear camera will be a great way to capture incredible underwater photos. Another way to capture underwater or beach photos without damaging your phone is by using a waterproof phone pouch. You can use the waterproof pouch during kayaking or boat tours by wearing your phone around your neck.
Looking to go on a whale-watching tour in Kauai but worried about getting seasick? If so, packing seasickness wristbands is a great idea to midgate experiencing nausea while you enjoy the open water and hopefully see humpback whales!
Toiletries
Everyone has their own personal preferences regarding toiletries, but there are a few standouts I would be remiss if I didn’t call out in this post. First is packing a reef-safe mineral-based sunscreen. Hawaii banned sunscreens containing chemicals that have proven to have damaging effects on the marine environment and coral reefs. If you don’t plan on taking a dip in the ocean, my favorite face sunscreen can be found here, and my favorite body sunscreen can be found here. Don’t forget to pack some after sun or aloe in case of sunburns!
When hiking in a warm jungle environment, encountering bugs is inevitable. This is why you should include bug spray on your Kauai packing list if you plan to hike. Plus, no one wants to deal with itchy bug bites while on vacation.
Last but certainly not least are all your standard toiletry items in travel-size containers (these are the best of the best). Some go-to items include moisturizer, deodorant, cleanser, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and eye cream. I suggest packing a travel-size leave-in conditioner since your hair might be a little drier due to the sun and time spent in the water.
Kauai Packing List Tip: Pack a small microfiber towel to dry your hair after a shower instead of using oversized hotel towels.
Makeup
Not everyone will relate, but I enjoy doing my makeup for an evening out on vacation. Makeup is another area where people have strong personal preferences, so obviously, do what makes you the most comfortable. Depending on when you’re traveling to Kauai, it might not be worth doing a full face of makeup during the day since it could melt in the sun. You might opt for a tinted moisturizer over a traditional foundation for daytime wear. If you decide to wear makeup in Kauai, I highly advise packing a setting spray to keep your makeup intact.
